Panthers finish 2nd at the North Duals Tournament

Panthers finish 2nd at the North Duals Tournament
Sacramento City College hosted the North Dual tournament last Saturday.  Normally, this tournament is held at Santa Rosa JC, but because of the devastating fires hitting the Santa Rosa Area, SCC stepped up to host. We were very fortunate that our facility was available as well as staff to help run the meet...Our hearts go out to Santa Rosa JC and the surrounding areas for all they have gone through. We hope they have a quick recovery time.
As for the tournament, SCC finished in 2nd place, losing in the finals to #1 Ranked Fresno City College. A number of Panthers made drops to new weights. They included:  Carlos Alvarez to 141, Brian Horn to 165, Isaac Bertalotto to 174 and Daniel Warden to 197.
The first round of the tournament had the #2 seed Panthers against the Modesto JC Pirates. SCC won 9 of 10 matches for a 54-6 victory.  SCC was lead by Morgan Sauseda (Soph-125- Chico HS), Carlos Alvarez (Soph-141-Folsom HS) and Isaac Bertolotto (FR-174-Turlock HS) all scored Falls in this match.
Next up was BIG 8 foe, Delta College.  SCC won 8 of 10 matches for a 45-9 victory.  The Panthers were lead by Jason Stokkeland (Soph-149-Calaveras HS) and Abel Garcia (FR-174-Oakdale HS) who both scored falls for SCC.
The two wins moved SCC into the Championship Pool with Chabot College and Fresno City College. First up for the Panther squad was Chabot.  SCC won the first 9 matches to get a 49-6 win.  The team had pins from Sauseda, Trevor Mattox (FR-133-Pitman HS), Sal Pochiero (Soph-141- Salinas HS) and Daniel Warden (FR-197-Union Mine HS).
That led to the match with Fresno City.  FCC had 4 wrestlers ranked #1 in the state in the first 4 weights and one that was ranked second…as well as others ranked 4-6.  It was a tough task, but one that SCC felt could step up to. In the long run, FCC flexed their skills and won 35-3.  SCC got it's only win at 174 where Abel Garcia scored a 7-2 win.  Many matches were close, where one TD the other way could have made the difference.  SCC lost 6 of the matches by decision and look to improve by the end of the season to reverse the outcomes of those matches.
SCC travels to Delta College on Wednesday for a BIG 8 Dual.  Match starts at 7 PM. The Panthers are currently 1-0 in conference as they attempt to win their 7thstraight BIG 8 Conference Title. They are 4-1 on the year in all duals.
This weekend, SCC travels to Cuesta College for the Meathead Movers Tournament. It starts at 9 AM on Saturday the 21st..  SCC has won this tournament the past two years.
