Answers to the FAQs
1. What Equipment is in the Life Fitness Center? The Life Fitness Center has three major areas of focus. The cardiovascular area features recumbent bikes, treadmills, elliptical trainers, and stationary bikes. The strength training area features both plate loaded and selectorized equipment for every muscle group. In addition, power racks, dumbbells, and other free weights are available for more specialized training. Power lifting and Olympic lifting equipment is also available. The third area features the "Aerobic Super Circuit" considered by many fitness experts to be one of the most effective ways to train and improve physical health. The Super Circuit combines selectorized weight training equipment and stationary bikes that students use in an alternating fashion to generate a full body workout!
2. How can I use the Life Fitness Center? To use the LFC, you must be enrolled in a class that is taught in the LFC. The Physical Education Department has two different types of Physical Education Courses that are taught in the Life Fitness Center: Self-paced, open-entry/open-exit courses and traditionally structured courses. You can choose Fitness 371 which is a self-paced, open-entry/open-exit class that has a more flexible class schedule or choose one of the traditional instructional format classes Fitness 380 or 381 to suit your needs. Please see the schedule of classes or the college catalog for course descriptions. PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT YOU MUST COMPLETE A MANDATORY PROGRAM ORIENTATION THE FIRST TIME YOU ENROLL IN FITNESS 371, THE SELF-PACED, OPEN-ENTRY/OPEN-EXIT COURSE.
The credit division of Sacramento City College is open to all people who are interested in taking advantage of the college curriculum and earning academic credit. Staff and community members are strongly encouraged to participate in the Life Fitness Center but must be registered in a Fitness Center class to utilize the facility. Follow the online enrollment and registration instructions at http://www.scc.losrios.edu 4. Why do I have to take a class to use the Life Fitness Center? The Life Fitness Center is a Physical Education classroom located on the Sacramento City College campus. The Life Fitness Program and other Physical Education classes offered in the Life Fitness Center are part of the Physical Education Division and the credit division of Sacramento City College. Students receive academic credit for the successful completion of any of the courses offered in the Division.
The Life Fitness
Center offers Fitness 371 which is a self-paced, open entry/open-exit
course and allows each enrolled student to use the LFC during the open lab hours to
complete the course curriculum.
6. The courses in the Life Fitness Program are self-paced classes…what does that mean? Self- paced means you work through the course curriculum at your own pace during the open lab hours of the Life Fitness Center. While the class is self-paced, there are minimum attendance requirements in order to maintain your course enrollment. Self-paced does not mean that you can enroll for the class and then leave all your work for the end of the semester. Once you enroll, you must begin to work on the course curriculum.
7. What is the attendance policy for the Life Fitness Program self-paced classes? Like any Physical Education activity class, consistent attendance is required. If you are in a one unit class you should plan on spending 2-4 hours per week engaged in course activity. But remember, the later you enroll and begin your program, the more hours per week you'll need to do in order to meet the course attendance requirements.
8. Once I'm enrolled in a Life Fitness Program self-paced class, could I ever be dropped from the class and lose my opportunity to use the Life Fitness Center? Yes, students are dropped for non-attendance - if you do not complete the required class attendance hours, you will be dropped from the course. Also, students who do not comply with the facility rules can be suspended or dropped from the course.
9. What do I need to do to get started with my self-paced Life Fitness Program? When should I do all this?
10. Why do I need to purchase a textbook and do an orientation? I already know how to exercise? The Life Fitness Program is a fitness education program consisting of a variety of courses designed to improve your knowledge of physical fitness. It is our hope that you will be exposed to and learn, not only how to exercise properly, but why exercise is so important to the quality and longevity of your life. We hope that through the Life Fitness Program and its instructors, you can add new tools and knowledge to your fitness "toolbox".
The Life Fitness Program requires you to complete an orientation to the program, so that you can be aware of three things:1) Why the Life Fitness Program exists and the goals of the Life Fitness Program, 2) the rules and regulations of the Life Fitness Center, and 3) to review your health/medical history so that your exercise programming can be done safely and effectively. The orientation allows students to understand what is expected of them as participants in the program.
11. Can I just use someone else's textbook for any Life Fitness Program self-paced class? No, there are mandatory forms located in the textbook (e.g. PAR-Q, Waiver, etc.) that can only be completed with a new book. Each new student is required to submit these forms, so you'll need your own book.
12. Is the orientation mandatory for the Life Fitness Center? If you enroll in the open-entry/open-exit Fitness 371 Life Fitness Center Training course (see above), you MUST ATTEND A MANDATORY ORIENTATION SESSION. Students must have the Life Fitness Center Manual when completing the orientation. The LFC Manual (and required lanyard) is available to purchase in the campus bookstore.
Students who enroll in Fitness 371, must attend an 1 1/2 hour orientation session before using the Life Fitness Center. Students will not be allowed to use the Fitness center until they have completed an orientation session. Below are the orientation days, times and location:
14. What are the Hours of the Life Fitness Center?
15. Why is the Life Fitness Center closed Monday through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 12 noon to students enrolled in the Life Fitness Program? The Life Fitness Center houses two types of Physical Education curriculum – the self-paced formatted classes of the Life Fitness Program and traditionally formatted classes. The traditionally formatted classes meet at specific days and times with an instructor who teaches the class each session. Those classes (FITNS 380 Circuit Weight Training and 381 Weight Training) meet Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. with their instructors. The LFC is open only to students enrolled in FITNS 380 and 381 Weight training classes during those hours.
16. Are there any other classes offered in the Life Fitness Center?
Traditionally
structured Courses using the Life Fitness Center: Fitness 380 and 381 courses follow a traditional class schedule where students attend class on a specific day and time. See the schedule of classes for times/dates. Students may take any of the traditionally structured classes a maximum of 4 times. 17. How many times can I take a Physical Education class? You are allowed to take any Physical Education class a maximum of 4 times. We do not allow students to "audit" any of the self-paced Life Fitness Program classes.
18. Can I use the Life Fitness Center if I enroll in any Physical Education class? No, the only students allowed to use the Life Fitness Center are those who are enrolled in a Life Fitness Program class or one of the Fitness 380 or 381 classes. |
